Safety information
This is an FDA-approved prescription medicine. A licensed provider decides whether treatment is appropriate. Prescription required. Read the full Prescribing Information and Medication Guide from the manufacturer before you start.
Boxed warning: risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. Do not use if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
Full safety information
Important: WARNING: risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. In studies with rodents, the Wegovy® pill and medicines like it caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known if they cause these tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in people. Do not use if you or any family member has ever had MTC, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Tell your provider right away about a lump or swelling in your neck, trouble swallowing, hoarseness or shortness of breath.
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, belly pain and lower appetite. They are most likely when you start or step up a dose and often ease with time. Serious but less common risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, low blood sugar (especially with insulin or a sulfonylurea), kidney problems from dehydration, serious allergic reactions, and changes in mood. Get emergency care for severe belly pain that will not go away, signs of an allergic reaction, or thoughts of self-harm.
Other warnings include diabetic eye (retinopathy) complications in people with type 2 diabetes, increased heart rate, and a rare risk of food or liquid getting into the lungs during anesthesia or sedation. Because it is taken by mouth, it can affect how some other oral medicines absorb, so share your full medicine list.
Not for use during pregnancy. Stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy and tell your provider if you are breastfeeding. Tell the care team if you have surgery planned, since these medicines can affect anesthesia and how your stomach empties.
The Wegovy® pill is oral semaglutide, an FDA-approved once-daily tablet for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight plus at least one weight-related condition. It is used with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. It is a prescription medicine, and a licensed provider decides whether it is appropriate after reviewing your health history.
How do I take the Wegovy pill?
Take one tablet each morning on an empty stomach with a small sip of plain water, up to about 4 ounces. Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medicines. Swallow it whole. Following these steps matters, because food and extra liquid can reduce how much medicine your body absorbs.
Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the Wegovy shot?
Both are FDA-approved for chronic weight management and contain semaglutide, but they are different products with different doses and routines. Results vary from person to person, and how consistently you follow the morning routine matters for the pill. Your provider can walk you through the label information for each and help you pick the one that fits your life.
What side effects can the Wegovy pill cause?
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, belly pain and lower appetite, mostly while the dose increases. Serious but less common risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems and low blood sugar in people with diabetes. It carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors. Get urgent care for severe belly pain that will not go away.
Can I switch from the Wegovy pen to the pill?
Possibly. Switching between the weekly injection and the daily pill is a provider decision, because the doses are different and do not convert one to one. Message the care team with your current dose and how you are doing. A licensed provider will review your history and decide whether switching is appropriate and how to do it safely.
What happens if the provider says treatment is not right for me?
If a licensed provider reviews your intake and decides treatment is not appropriate, you are not charged for treatment. The provider may explain why, suggest a different option in KIN Meds care, or recommend you see a local doctor first. That decision is based on your health history, current medicines and safety, not on which product you picked in the quiz.
A few quick questions, then a licensed provider reviews your intake in 24 hours or less. If treatment is not appropriate, you are not charged for treatment.
