Perimenopause and menopause, in plain English

Perimenopause is the transition years, often starting in your 40s, when estrogen and progesterone rise and fall unpredictably. Cycles change, sleep gets lighter, and symptoms can show up one month and vanish the next. Menopause is confirmed after 12 months in a row without a period, and postmenopause is everything after.

At KIN Meds you choose the care area, not a product. You share your symptoms and history, meet a licensed provider on a video visit, and your provider decides whether HRT for menopause is appropriate and which form of estradiol and progesterone makes sense for you. Prescription required.

Know this

The good-to-know.

1Estradiol patch

A thin patch that releases estradiol through the skin at a steady rate and is changed on a set schedule. Because it skips the digestive system, providers may favor it for some women with certain risk factors.

2Estradiol cream

Applied to the skin for whole-body (systemic) estrogen. It gives your provider a way to adjust the amount in small steps.

3Tablets and capsules

Oral estradiol taken once a day, simple to fit into a routine. It passes through the liver, which your provider weighs against your personal history.

4Vaginal estradiol cream

A low-dose local cream for vaginal dryness, irritation and discomfort with intimacy. It works mainly where it is applied and can be used on its own or alongside systemic therapy.

5Progesterone

If you still have a uterus and use systemic estrogen, you also need a progestogen such as progesterone to protect the uterine lining. Oral progesterone is usually taken at bedtime because it can make you drowsy.

6Hysterectomy and surgical menopause

If your uterus has been removed, estrogen alone is often an option. Removing the ovaries can bring on sudden surgical menopause with stronger symptoms, so tell your provider exactly which surgery you had.

FAQ

Good questions.

Kind answers.

How old do I need to be for online hormone therapy?

Online hormone care at KIN Meds starts at age 35. Women 40 and older can start without labs and go straight to a video visit with a licensed provider. Women 35 to 39 complete a hormone lab panel first, then meet their provider by video once results are in. If you are under 35, talk with your doctor in person about your symptoms.

What is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?

Perimenopause is the transition before menopause, when estrogen and progesterone levels swing and periods become irregular. It often begins in your 40s and can last several years. Menopause is the point when you have gone 12 months in a row without a period. Symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, sleep changes and vaginal dryness can happen in both stages, and hormone therapy may be considered in either one.

Do I need a video visit to get hormone therapy online at KIN Meds?

Yes. Women's hormone therapy at KIN Meds is reviewed online by a licensed provider for women 40 and older; ages 35 to 39 start with labs and a video visit. You complete an online intake first, then talk with your provider about your symptoms, cycle history, surgeries, medications and goals. Your provider decides whether hormone therapy is appropriate and which form fits you. If treatment is not appropriate, you are not charged for treatment.

Which is better for menopause, an estrogen patch, cream or pill?

There is no single best form. Patches and skin creams deliver estradiol through the skin, while tablets and capsules are taken by mouth and processed by the liver. Vaginal estradiol cream treats local symptoms like dryness and painful sex. Your provider weighs your age, symptoms, health history and preferences to choose. At KIN Meds you do not pick a form yourself, your provider recommends one.

Do I need progesterone if I had a hysterectomy?

Often not. Progesterone is mainly prescribed to protect the lining of the uterus from overgrowth when you take systemic estrogen. If your uterus has been removed, estrogen alone is frequently an option, although some providers still consider progesterone for other reasons, such as sleep. Tell your provider whether your ovaries were also removed, since that affects symptoms and treatment choices.

Do I need blood tests to start menopause hormone therapy?

It depends on your age. Online hormone care at KIN Meds starts at 35. If you are 40 or older, you do not need labs to start: menopause is usually diagnosed from your age, symptoms and period history, so you go straight to your video visit. If you are 35 to 39, you start with a hormone lab panel, and once results are in you meet your provider by video. Labs can be done at a lab near you, with an at-home kit, or with mobile phlebotomy in select states.

Is hormone therapy safe for menopause symptoms?

For many healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of their last period, The Menopause Society says the benefits of hormone therapy often outweigh the risks. Risks depend on age, dose, form and health history and can include blood clots, stroke and, with some regimens, breast or uterine cancer. Your provider reviews your personal and family history before prescribing and checks in as your needs change.
