Hair care for men and women is on the way

We are building hair care options that a licensed provider can prescribe after an online review: finasteride, oral minoxidil, and custom topical sprays compounded by a licensed 503A pharmacy. Compounded sprays are not FDA-approved. Prescription required, and a licensed provider decides whether treatment is appropriate.

Hair shedding after weight loss is common. A significant change such as weight loss, illness or surgery can push more hairs into the resting phase, a condition called telogen effluvium, and shedding usually shows up 2 to 3 months later. It is often temporary. Want first access? Join the waitlist through our contact page and the care team will reach out when hair care opens.

Know this

The good-to-know.

1Finasteride

An FDA-approved oral medication for male pattern hair loss in men that lowers DHT, a hormone linked to hair follicle shrinking. It is not for women who are or may become pregnant, and they should not handle crushed or broken tablets.

2Oral minoxidil

Minoxidil tablets are FDA-approved for high blood pressure, and low doses are sometimes prescribed off-label for hair loss. Possible side effects include unwanted hair growth, swelling and a faster heartbeat, so a provider review matters.

3Custom topical sprays

Compounded sprays can combine ingredients like minoxidil and finasteride in one step you apply to the scalp. They are compounded by a licensed 503A pharmacy and are not FDA-approved.

4Shedding after big metabolic changes

Big metabolic changes, like rapid weight loss, can trigger telogen effluvium, with shedding usually 2 to 3 months after the change. Enough protein and a steady pace may help, and hair often regrows once the trigger passes.

5Check the root cause with KIN Labs

Thyroid issues, low iron and hormone shifts can all contribute to hair loss. Labs can help your provider see the full picture, at a lab near you, with an at-home kit, or with mobile phlebotomy in select states.

FAQ

Good questions.

Kind answers.

Why am I losing hair after big metabolic changes?

Rapid weight loss is a known trigger for telogen effluvium, a type of temporary shedding where more hairs than usual shift into the resting phase at once. Shedding usually shows up 2 to 3 months after the change and often improves on its own once your body settles. Eating enough protein and checking for low iron or thyroid issues can help. Talk with a licensed provider if shedding is heavy or lasts.

Is hair shedding after weight loss permanent?

Shedding from telogen effluvium is usually temporary. According to dermatologists, hair often returns to its normal fullness within several months after the trigger passes, though it can take longer. If shedding continues, or you notice a thinning pattern at the crown or part, you may also have hereditary hair loss, which is ongoing and may benefit from treatment. A licensed provider can help tell the difference.

Can women take finasteride?

Finasteride is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss in men. It is not for women who are or may become pregnant, because it can cause birth defects in a male fetus, and those women should not handle crushed or broken tablets. Some providers consider it off-label for certain women who cannot become pregnant. A licensed provider reviews your history and decides whether it is appropriate.

What is oral minoxidil for hair loss?

Minoxidil tablets are FDA-approved to treat high blood pressure. Providers sometimes prescribe them at low doses off-label for hair loss in men and women. Possible side effects include unwanted facial or body hair, fluid retention or swelling, dizziness and a faster heartbeat. Because it affects blood pressure, a licensed provider reviews your heart health and medications before prescribing.

What causes thinning hair in men and women?

The most common cause is hereditary hair loss, often called male or female pattern hair loss. Other causes include telogen effluvium after stress, illness, childbirth or a significant change in weight, thyroid disease, low iron, certain medications and hormone changes such as menopause. Because treatment depends on the cause, a licensed provider reviews your history and may suggest labs before recommending a plan.
